The Nature Of Information That Must Be Displayed By...

Objective This research will determine the nature of information that must be displayed by computer in order to enhance human insight problem solving in ISR and C2 applications. Insight problem solving refers to the sudden realization of a successful problem solution, typically involving a non-routine problem, following an impasse—the time period when no solution seemed obvious. Virtually all of us have experienced insight at some time in our lives, including world-class problem solving by famous scientists and mathematicians (Wallas, 1926). Insight can be seen as a form of intellectual ability. That insight can occur with important real-world problem solving makes its potential enhancement all the more critical for ISR and C2 applications because non-routine problem solving is the norm (e.g., A2AD situations). Insight was selected for study because it possesses several key attributes: (1) insight involves sensemaking (Patterson Eggleston, under review), a precursor to successful decision making; (2) insight scales to the real world and is not just a laboratory phenomenon (Wallas, 1926); and (3) insight in the laboratory can be primed via certain cues—made faster and more accurate (e.g., Broderbauer, Huemer Riffert, 2013; Maier, 1931). Despite these attributes, virtually nothing is known about how insight might be primed in analysts in real-world ISR and C2 situations. Since insight is a form of intellectual ability, insight priming is intelligence amplification. Analysis Of The Poem Hulga s Spiritual Blindness

Thesis: Hulga’s spiritual blindness is also the ending of this story. Hulga concerns herself with what is which relates the her disdainful rejection of the spiritual, so Hulga takes from the passage exactly what Heidegger is arguing against. (Hubbord, p53) Hulga is ethically problematic but nonetheless useful in O’ Connor’s vision of the damning and damned, universe.† She is disabled and physically carries the stigma of abnormality, metaphorically emboding the â€Å"sins† of the world with her.† (Behling p.88) â€Å"Hulga is a 32 year-old with a Ph.D. in philosophy and an artificial leg. Because of her weak heart, she lives at home with her mother, if not for her condition, Hulga â€Å"would be for from these red hills and good country people. She would be in a university lecturing to people who knew what she was talking about†. (Behling p.88) Hulga’s commitment to nihilism is not so absolute as to give pointer such and unqualified claim, though as the story demonstrates, she has flirted with a force she does not understand and which is competent to violate her soul in a most obscene manner, thus exposing its emptiness.(Edmondson III, p.158) The remainder of the story is a study in manipulation, seduction and subjugation with Pointer as the teacher. Hulga becomes vulnerable because, of her empty wounded state of psyche. â€Å"Spiritually and physically crippled† â€Å"a wooden part of her soul that correspondes to her wooden leg.† (Behling p.158) Hulga’s physical afflictions her heart condition,

Respect the Party free essay sample

A new culture is emerging in American universities, and it is affecting hormonal teenag-ers aged 18 to 22. Alcohol directly affects the brain’s frontal lobe (where decision-making oc-curs) and is not fully developed until 23. Teenagers lose all control once the frontal lobe is af-fected. Victims have reported an increased desire for risky behaviors including: underage drink-ing, unprotected sex, and public nudity. This culture is causing quite a stir in these fine-learning institutions (or is it?). Professors continue teaching and assigning homework as usual. (Lectures must go on!) Administrators re-port spending time in cubicles filing technical forms, while students menacingly plot the next wild party. When the President from a leading university was asked about this problem, he re-sponded casually, â€Å"Things are being done. I know the paperwork is around here somewhere.† A first-year student, who was once homeschooled, describes her first encounter with the-se affected individuals: â€Å"This weekend a girl approached me and told me that she and a group of other students would be attending a dance club, where they planned to rub body parts together in a sexual manner. We will write a custom essay sample on Respect the Party or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Another girl chimed in saying that they called this methodical dancing, ‘twerk-ing’. I was horrified.† This culture of disrespect and alcohol abuse seems to be supported by music and social media outlets. The music industry is thriving off emotionally troubled teenagers who seek com-fort with lyrics such as â€Å"I just want to party† and â€Å"turn down for what.† The lyrics propel the teens into believing they can do anything if they set their brainwashed minds to it. Musicians and recording labels traditionally try to appeal to youth audiences, who are more likely to relate to their music. Musicians have moved away from lyrics about love and heartache to drugs and sex. These lyrics encourage teens to dance, sing, and say what they want, while completely disregard-ing traditional moral standards. Today’s teens accept this dramatic shift with open arms. Social media is also playing a large role in this culture. Recently, popular actress Amanda Bynes was targeted for provoking teen’s bad behavior. She reportedly called out other actors by posting negative thoughts and profanities on social networking sites, which only encouraged teens to behave in a similar, disrespectful manner. Teens use social media to find out about the next â€Å"big thing,† using common applications such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These social media outlets allow teens to be more connected to pop culture than ever before. One col-lege student said, â€Å"Social networking is the only way to be connected. Without it you are defi-nitely not cool. You are out of the loop, and nobody likes to be out of the loop.† Well said. With-out social media, this new culture would not have been born and will certainly not continue. What happened to the good old days when students attended universities to only get an edu-cation? What happened to the times when students enjoyed each other’s company not surrounded by alcohol and disrespect? And more importantly, when is it all going to come to an end? These questions may never have a definitive answer, but regardless, the parties will go on! Why do students embrace this culture so willingly? The answer is simple: times have changed. This is a different generation, whether your grandpa likes it or not. This is not your Woodstock-attending, minivan-driving culture; it is a culture that defies all standards set by its predecessors. But, it is important that we establish new standards for our society. Ladies, you don’t need to wear heavy makeup, push-up bras, and booty shorts to get a man’s attention. And, gentlemen, ladies don’t need to know how many beers you can chug; they are much more impressed by your manners. Respect your peers and then the party can go on!

Yoghurt Manufacturing free essay sample

1. Adjust Milk Composition Blend IngredientsMilk composition may be adjusted to achieve the desired fat and solids content. Often dry milk is added to increase the amount of whey protein to provide a desirable texture. Ingredients such as stabilizers are added at this time.2. Pasteurize MilkThe milk mixture is pasteurized at 185Â °F (85Â °C) for 30 minutes or at 203Â °F (95Â °C) for 10 minutes. A high heat treatment is used to denature the whey (serum) proteins. This allows the proteins to form a more stable gel, which prevents separation of the water during storage. The high heat treatment also further reduces the number of spoilage organisms in the milk to provide a better environment for the starter cultures to grow. Yogurt is pasteurized before the starter cultures are added to ensure that the cultures remain active in the yogurt after fermentation to act as probiotics; if the yogurt is pasteurized after fermentation the cultures will be inactivated. HomogenizeThe blend is homogenized (2000 to 2500 psi) to mix all ingredients thoroughly and improve yogurt consistency.4. Cool MilkThe milk is cooled to 108Â °F (42Â °C) to bring the yogurt to the ideal growth temperature for the starter culture.5. Inoculate with Starter CulturesThe starter cultures are mixed into the cooled milk.6. HoldThe milk is held at 108Â °F (42Â °C) until a pH 4.5 is reached. This allows the fermentation to progress to form a soft gel and the characteristic flavor of yogurt. This process can take several hours.7. CoolThe yogurt is cooled to 7Â °C to stop the fermentation process.8. Add Fruit FlavorsFruit and flavors are added at different steps depending on the type of yogurt. For set style yogurt the fruit is added in the bottom of the cup and then the inoculated yogurt is poured on top and the yogurt is fermented in the cup. For swiss style yogurt the fruit is blended with the fermented, cooled yogurt prior to packaging.

Differences between Buddhism and Taoism

Differences between Buddhism and Taoism Asian belief systems do not closely relate to Christian mentality. Their terms sound foreign and mystical to us. Yet Asia has several very distinct worldviews that deal with life, death, and sin in its own peculiar fashion. Two of the most prominent are Buddhism and Taoism. They are intricately woven into the history of Asia. But if we look deeper – those ideas may have had a certain impact on how we perceive the world as well. What do we know about the Asian worldview except for what we usually see on popular TV? Of course, we do possess some vague notions of Asian spirituality—the importance of meditation and the positive impacts of mindfulness. No wonder the two most common Asian philosophies, Taoism and Buddhism, are often consequently mixed together because both dwell of these practices. But in reality, those are two very different trees that just have some intersecting branches. Which religion does not speak about immortality after all? History of Buddhism and Taoism So what is the first difference between Taoism and Buddhism? Let us look into their past. Though both religions have emerged around 5–6th century B.C, they have evolved under different circumstances and in different areas: one in China, the other—in India. Chinese lore considers Lao Tzu, a respected philosopher, to be the founder of the religion. This honored man lived and worked as a state librarian around 5–6 century B.C. He was interested in studying life and natural events around him. With time, he came to an idea that harmony and balance are crucial things that keep our world going. People’s selfishness, greed, and corruption are dangerous because they destroy everything. Modern researchers consider that Lao Tzu was not the real founder of Tao; in Tao Te Ching (â€Å"The Book of the Way†), he has described some already known beliefs using beautiful poetry (Robinet, 1997). Taoism very quickly gained popularity. It was at its peak during the Chinese Tang dynasty. Later, its influence went downhill. As Buddhist monks came to the state, the battle between Taoism vs Buddhism began. But Tao, or the Road, still has significant cultural influence in China even in our day and age. It is obvious even for a casual observ er—just see some fantasy Chinese TV series. Buddhism has also emerged around 5 century B.C. in India. Its founder was a prince, not a simple philosopher. His name was Siddhartha Gautama. He was a son of a small-state Rajah in Eastern India. His life had a drastic turn after he suddenly had his revelations about the world and fate—he left his palace to become a traveling teacher and soon gathered followers. He is said to have reached his ultimate goal—Nirvana after death. Consequently, his followers began calling him Gautama Buddha. When the founder of Buddhism had passed away, many new branches of Buddhism were developed. They spread quickly conquering India, China, and even Southeast Asia. Both religions soon became powerful in their own right. In some countries, both belief systems coexisted peacefully; in others, for instance, during the Joseon dynasty in Korea, Buddhism was sometimes persecuted. The Buddhism vs Taoism competition never really subsided in other countries as well. Main Concept of Taoism and Buddhism Depending on how you look at both religions, they are similar and not at the same time: the focus is on the soul rather than the body; afterlife and reincarnation are important in both; the goal is to achieve immortality; meditation and righteous life are vital. Still, a Buddhist views life very differently from a devout Taoist. The complex path of Buddhism Prince Siddhartha once realized: life is suffering. Emotions, desires, and selfishness lead to it. Illnesses are also an inescapable part of life. All living beings go through the cycle of life. The soul gets born into a new body that grows, gets ill and dies. Then it gets reborn again, unable to escape the Samsara—the wheel of reincarnations. The ultimate aim is escaping this ever-cycling existence. Buddhism has instructions: learn four noble truths while strictly following a Noble Eightfold Path. What are the eight roads that form this complex path of the Buddha? Here they are: Knowledge. There is only one proper way of learning. Only this correct knowledge would help a novice understand those four noble truths. Intention What we think and feel is crucial. Adverse emotions such as hate, greed, or envy, have to be suppressed. Desires are also a bad influence. A quiet, peaceful life without violence is the proper goal. Speech Words can harm. So it is important to remember their power. A virtuous person never pronounces anything harmful or aggressive towards people. Behavior There are several acts that no follower of Buddha is allowed to do: killing, stealing, drinking alcohol, forcing sex, and lying. Honest work. Despite Buddhist monks being traditionally poor without any desire for riches, regular Buddhists can earn money. But they should gain their wealth through legal means. Legal also means completely moral. Strength of will A traveler that steps on this perilous path needs a strong will. It is undoubtedly hard to suppress emotions and desires without a certain inner strength. Mindfulness. This is a crucial concept for many practices in the East, not just the teachings of Buddha. Mindfulness means being aware of all that is happening around, both inside and outside the body. A mindful person sees everything objectively, without bias. A clear mind becomes one’s power. Concentration. We have finally reached the last aspect. It is hard to achieve all of the above goals without proper focus and concentration. Correct concentration is achieved through practicing meditation. During meditation, ones mind clears all superficial things. As a result, one’s spiritual strength slowly grows. Nirvana shines at the end of the tunnel of suffering. Here lies freedom from Samsara—together with immortality. Taoism and Harmony Another crucial difference between Taoism and Buddhism lies in how they fashion their metaphorical paths. Unlike Buddhism, Tao is a more straightforward and optimistic. While Nirvana is the end to suffering, Tao leads to an increase in the goodness and balance in our chaotic world. There are inner good qualities in everything and everyone initially. The meaning of Tao is not only about goodness and balance, though. This term also means the origin of the world. The present world is complicated, so the road to it is also difficult. To walk this way means to be following the ultimate law of all living beings. Each person has to figure out how to achieve harmony themselves. It wasnt initially so hard. Everything was simple before humans with their emotions came about. But when humans make an effort to right the world’s precious balance, they become one with the slightly appeased universe. The fact that they also gain immortality for their own souls should not be forgotten either. Important Beliefs Further investigation reveals how different the views of those two philosophies actually are. Reincarnation One of the recurring similarities between Buddhism and Taoism is both religions believe in life after death. All souls undergo transmigration—they leave their old bodies for new ones. This process is also known as reincarnation. Life does not end with death. Any life is just a stage in an endless circle of being constantly reborn as a new living being. But though this particular idea is common, the explanations differ. In Taoism, immortality is the intrinsic quality of any soul. It is powerful, can cross time and space (Difference Between, 2010). That is why it gets reborn from body to body until Tao if finally achieved. There is hidden goodness, an inner light in everyone. It is a natural guide. The one who follows it makes themselves and their world better. The mind gets free of all evil influences. This way Tao is reached successfully. The belief of the Buddhists is different. They view reincarnation as a part of eternal suffering connected with Samsara. Nirvana is the final state of it. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the soul of a human would be reborn as such. Depending on one’s actions—karma—a soul can be reborn as an animal. Good deeds can prevent this, while evil ones increase the likelihood of one being reborn as a worm or a fox. There are three stages of transmigration, according to this system. The first stage is hell. It is populated by souls who refuse to accept Buddhist teachings and forgo everything that those teachings stand for. You get to be reborn as an animal at the second stage. A soul that used to do something decidedly evil would transmigrate into animal forms. Unlike hell, at this stage, a soul can slowly acquire human-like features. It has a chance to be reborn as a human in a while. If the spirit practices chastity and subdues selfishness and lust, its fate can change. It reaches the final stage where it would initially go through multiple spiritual shifts. But with practice, not only would it be reborn as a human—it would have a chance to attain Nirvana. The concept of action, or karma, is central to these ideas. What your soul was doing in the past determines your present life. And what you are doing now can determine how your next reincarnation lives. Such actions are not always physical, even thoughts and words can influence what you are reborn into. There is no fate; only certain consequences of how we go through our lives. Taoists also believe in karma, but they have rituals and practices that are supposed to â€Å"clean† it. Buddhists have nothing of the sort. Health Mentality affects the perception of health and treatment. Tao and Buddhism agree on that, but their approaches differ. For pupils of Prince Gautama, illness is just a part of the general suffering that is life. There are two ways to fight it. For some, meditation can become a tool to pinpoint where the problem stems from. Concentration can help in understanding one’s body and environment (Knierim T., 2010). It is quite possible that by doing good deeds, a person can get better naturally. Second, Buddhists allow using medicine. As Buddhists abhor killing living things, they use only natural, herbal medicines to treat people. Taoists in their turn do not view illness as a normal part of life. If someone is ill, it means that their body is just broken somehow. In the natural world, there are two opposite forces: Yin and the Yang. The balance of those two forces forms our world. If the Yin-Yang pair is out of balance, it influences Chi—the inner energy of the body. It can stop circulating around the body and stops in some particular place. Treating illnesses means restoring normal Chi and balance. Have you heard of Tai Chi? This practice directly stems from these ideas, as its main idea is exactly about finding harmony between energies. Marriage The marriage of two souls is a direct consequence of trying to balance everything in the Taoist worldview. Here, a woman is Yin, and the man is Yang. When Yin and Yang meet, they create harmony. To be married is to follow Tao and create a new future road—for marriage also means children. A harmonious marriage is as important as harmony in nature. It is best to avoid conflicts between spouses. Both should be calm, loving, and have respect. Care for each other is essential. Partners should sincerely accept each other by forgetting pride and selfishness. No marriage can be viable without both sacrifice and mutual support. For a regular Buddhist, marriage is not particularly necessary. Marriage is important mostly because sex outside of matrimony is considered a sin. Still, marriage has its own purposes. First is procreation. Having children is important not only for an individual couple but for society as a whole. Children support their parents. Family traditions are important as well (Gamage C., 1998). A second purpose is to satisfy all of one’s five senses. In a successful marriage, both partners possess several essential qualities. First, both need to have faith—they have to understand and believe each other. Three other qualities—virtue, generosity, and wisdom stem from this first requirement. We have covered many aspects of the two main Asian worldviews and found a lot of vital differences, as well as some striking similarities. When a Buddhist and a Taoist look at life—they see opposite things. For one person, it is all suffering; the other sees creation that once was perfect, then just stumbled out of balance. Immortality here is not a real goal. It is just a method for making everything better, one soul at a time. A believer in Buddha frees the world from themselves altogether. The one who follows the shining inner path of Tao wants to return the Earth in its initial balance by making themselves worthy.

Free Essays on A Profile of WNEW-FM

WNEW-FM is one of New York City’s oldest and most storied FM radio stations. It began its broadcast history in October 1967 as a freeform station that let the DJ’s pick their own music. It quickly became one of the most influential radio stations in the country, inspiring copycat stations in markets all across the country. Many musicians who live in the New York metropolitan area, such as Billy Joel, Lou Reed, and Joey Ramone, have been quoted saying that the station was very influential in the development of their musical tastes. (WNEW R.I.P., Eric Boehlert, Rolling Stone 10/28/99, pp 33) The station also helped start the careers of many artists, including Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, by introducing them to a wide and varied audience. Essay Example ities are responsible for the diminishing quantity of water in the world today a feature that requires speedy and effective solution through a change of attitude in order to safeguard the provision of water thus the continuation of life on the planet as the discussion below portrays. Effective management of water requires both effective legislation and change of attitude of the population in order to embrace economical utilization of water. In such extreme cases of water shortage as is the case in California, the government must encourage the citizens to utilize water economically and effectively in order to ensure that everyone has adequate amount of water. The state government has for example formulated a number of legislations that will compel the population to utilize water appropriately. The legislation for example bans the use of water in the maintenance of lawns and golf courses among others. Such uses of water consume large volumes of clean and safe water that other people would require for consumption. Unsafe farming practices are some of the major factors that enhance the depletion of water resources. The use of fertilizers in farms pollute water sources a feature that renders safe and clean water unfit for human use. Furthermore, the chemicals in the fertilizers make the water unsafe for other animals that live and use in water (Charles, 2011). Farmers spend billions of gallons of clean water in irrigating their famers. They end up wasting most of such water since they do not employ strategies that maximize water usage. Most farmers divert such fundamental sources of water as rivers into their famers thereby destroying entire ecosystems besides wasting the water, the excess water from the farms flow back into the rivers. Such water is never safe for human consumption given the fact that they possess sedimentation. Furthermore, some of the water mixes with pesticides and herbicides among other chemicals from the farm. The population of humans continues

How was Nazi Concentration Camp worser than Soviet Concentration Camps Movie Review

How was Nazi Concentration Camp worser than Soviet Concentration Camps - Movie Review Example They killed millions of people for political gains. In the end, it all boils down to quality vs. quantity. Under which regime did more people died? Vs. which regime killed more brutally? The popular perception is that perhaps Stalin regime probably killed far more people than the Nazis. But records from relevant sources (scholars from Poland, Israel and Germany) show that Stalin regime killed far less people than Nazis. The Nazi regime focused their attention on one race. Holocaust was targeted towards Jews and the majority of them were tortured to death or died from starvation. Stalin regime did kill millions of people in Gulag but these numbers are far less than Nazi killings. There is a certain reason as to why the Holocaust is considered far worse than the crimes committed by the Stalin. Labeling an entire race of people as ‘outcasts’ is more brutal than finding political excuses to take people’s lives. People who suffered under Stalin regime probably could have found an excuse to spare their lives by paying strict taxes but Jews had no chance under Hitler’s rein. They were either supposed to flea of die. It is sad and satirical to count dead bodies and claim a winner in this debate. Numbers of killings doesn’t matter. It’s about human lives and tragedy that was hammered down upon people living in both countries. Some people say that the number in Stalin camps were far more than the people at Nazi concentration camp. But when a loved one is lost, it is only the family that actually suffers and knows how much it hurts. For instance the argument about the number of people who were murder at Treblinka; whether they were 780,862 or 780,863 doesn’t make much sense. It is a huge number and the tragedy doesn’t subside by thinking that it is a huge number. The individual life matters and there is no truth beyond that. All these people were humans and they left loved ones to mourn their death. Nazis killed much more people than

Hardware analysis Essay Example for Free

Hardware analysis Essay If any mistakes are found, he has assured them more work for less pay by making them enter all data twice, after which the computer will check for errors (Double-entry verification). This will also show who is to blame for mistakes. Output The website should be viewable on the 17inch CRT monitor. A large high spec TFT monitor is not needed, as it will only be used to see the end product of the produced website, and how it will look like to viewers on the internet. This display would be sensible to use, as the majority of internet users will be using a similar output. A standard set of speakers will be needed to test the audio files that shall be put on the website. A top of the range sub-woofer system will not be necessary, as the main purpose of the speakers will be testing. A regular set of 230w speakers should be more than fit for the purpose. A top-quality colour laser printer will not be needed to print out pages from his website. Instead the HP DeskJet 620 printer that will come with the PC he will purchase will be more cost-effective, and is adequate for its purpose as only a few pages are going to be printed on the odd occasion. It will allow him to print out pages in black or in colour from his website when and so he pleases, to see what they would look like to customers if they were to print out the same pages. Backup\Security Strategy The website file containing the final system will be too large to be backed up on disk, as it could be well over a 100MB, due to images and video audio files. Instead, backups shall be made at least once a week onto to as many recordable compact discs (CD-R) as needed. This process will usually take 8 minutes per recordable disc as Mr Murray is lucky enough to be receiving a 32x CD rewriter with his pc. All backup in a different location to where the computer containing the main system is, in case there is a fire, theft or flood. To make sure nobody can manipulate the website design, the computer with the website on it, and the website itself are both going to be password-protected. This will be very useful, as Mr Murray can protect the database from any unwanted intruders, and choose who he wants to have the responsibility of knowing the password. Even so, Mr Murray needs to remember to frequently change his password, in case someone finds out the password and gains access to the database. Most important of all, Mr Murray and whomsoever he chooses to tell the password to, must not write the password anywhere as this increases the risk of an impostor tampering with the design of the website. Although, the software package is quite costly, as mentioned in the identify section cost is not a huge problem for Mr Murray, as he has some family members who are ready to invest in the business. On the other hand, Mr Murray does not want to be paying large amounts of money, for a system which is not 100% guaranteed to work. Therefore Mr Murray has to find a balance, and go with the software package which he thinks is the most likely to work. After some discussion, Mr Murray and I decided that MS Publisher would be the most suitable software package for Mr Murray to use. in relation to the user requirements mentioned in the identify section. Microsoft Word could be used. As mentioned in the Identify section, it can be used to insert pictures video clips, however it cannot be edited with as much ease as a true desktop publishing package. Front page Express would be a good choice, as it is specifically written for producing web sites. However, staff will need training, and the software package does not come cheep. Mr Murrays advertising employees currently use Microsoft Works to produce their material. Microsoft Works is a very simple version of its bigger brother Microsoft Word. This means that staff may not need training. Microsoft Word not only includes graphics and fancy headings, but can also be used to insert video clips. Nevertheless, the cost needed to buy the program will be an issue, as Mr Murray is currently in debt from a bank loan. A desktop Publishing program could also be purchased. This would be a considerable package to consider, as it is specifically written for publishing, and can be used to publish a web site, which is accessible from anywhere in the world. Even So, there is the cost of buying the program to consider (as mentioned earlier), as well as the money and time needed to train staff. include data collection evaluation methods [In each section (e. g. video , dvd etc.. ) the best title will have a video clip of it attached on that section of the website. ]

Metaphysical Explanation for the Number Three :: Philosophy

Metaphysical Explanation for the Number Three What is the Number Three? When examining what sort of existence the number three has, it is important first to understand exactly how it exists relevantly in the physical world. First of all, the primary existence of number three is not a tangible existence; one cannot walk through the forest and find threes growing wild with beautiful, silky, burnt orange and maroon spotted petals and green leaves. Second of all, the number three cannot do anything by itself to declare its own existence in the physical. Unlike air, gravity, or time, which are also intangible but still capable of certain physical actions such as wind, combustion (air), gravitational pull (gravity), or orbits (time), the number three does not have the physical properties necessary to be detected by the senses of any terrestrial being by itself. So, exactly how does the number three exist? Well, it has a co-dependent existence; in order for three to exist, it requires something called "units." Three exists as an application of units, and units can be any existing thing with physical properties. The units are what determine the type of existence three has. If the unit is another application such as five, six, or seven, or a variable (a variable occurs when the units’ arrangement or amount varies) such as X or Y, then the existence is not yet detectable; this only creates another type of application or formula that requires units with physical proprieties to be "plugged into it" in order to be detected through the senses in the real world. There are two ways that three can be used as an application to units; it can be used in terms of quantitative measurement or it can be used in terms of sequences. Earlier I mentioned that you cannot walk through the forest and find threes growing wild. However, you can find three tiger lilies growing wild. The tiger lilies are the units and three is the application. This is an example of three applied as a quantitative measurement. In other words, three is the amount of tiger lilies growing. You can tell there are three tiger lilies if you count the first seen as one, the second as two, and then the third as three, and you see no other tiger lilies besides the ones counted.

A Brief History of Economics Essay

Through his use of dialectical materialism, Marx not only changed the history of economic thought, but found great illumination for himself regarding the bonds of human society. The concept that seems relatively simple in today’s complex economic world was utterly revolutionary in the time of Marx: people develop their ideas about the world (and thereby, their ideas for how society should be organized and stratified) based on the material aspects of their lives. It was an elegant extension of basic Marxist theory: capitalism, according to Marx, is interested in offering naked materialism as a kind of booby prize to make up for the means of production being taken away from the people. If the people can no longer work for themselves and no longer work at perfecting their own craft as individuals, then, as Marx correctly deduced, people would require something to validate their work. This became the center of capitalism, as Marx understood it: materialism exists as a kind of justification for capitalism, and since materialism has permeated our culture to such an extreme degree, eventually social orders began to revolve around it. Hence, what capitalism serves as the cause of what Marx saw as nothing less than ongoing class warfare. It is interesting to note that Marx believed a violent revolution on the part of the proletariat was not simply a possible method of changing things, but actually served as the only method of changing things. This is because materialism was so embedded into class structures (which, in turn, was so embedded in power structures), and the only way for society to functionally survive was for it to become overturned completely. It is also interesting to note the ongoing effect that Marx has had on philosophic thought: materialism had previously been dislodged by Descartes and the famous declaration â€Å"I think, therefore I am;† as far as most people who pondered these things could conclude, thought preceded matter. However, Marx not only brought materialism to the philosophic forefront—the then-controversial idea that material preceded thought—but illustrated the notion that the abstractions of materialism had been concretized by capitalism into purchasable goods. 2: Marx and the Secret Source of Profit Perhaps the most enduring notion of Marx’s is the so-called secret of the source of profit under a capitalistic society†¦though such is Marx’s legacy of intellectual thought, a great many people simply accept this notion as reality: the source of profit is the surplus value that an employer gains from laborers. After all, the means of production have been taken from the people: skilled artisan cobblers have been replaced by factory line workers churning out shoe after shoe after shoe. The money saved by employing this assembly-line method of industrial production becomes pure profit for the employer. Interestingly, Marx tethered this to his own theories on circulating capital—that is, something that does not last, and is used up in the production of other goods and services, in direct opposition to fixed capital, which is traditionally held for over a year by a business or institution. Marx astutely deduced that the distinction between these concepts is not only relative, but arbitrary: the idea that capital held for 365 days is circulating and that capital held for 366 days is fixed is absurd. However, it allows the proletariat to essentially gloss over their own necessity to the entire institution of capitalism: they are led to believe that society is held up by the fixed capital of major investors and their long-term investments. In reality, society is held aloft by the ongoing purchases of the common man (and woman): their disposable income is burned off to provide them a sense that capitalism is worth it†¦it turn, their disposable income is used to make the rich richer, as the cliche goes, all the way up the capitalist pyramid. In Marx’s view, this is one of many ways that those in power forestall the seemingly unavoidable class war that he advocates: those with power—the purchasing power of the common man—are convinced they have none, and are bought off with trinkets. It is interesting to note that this echoes the master/slave morality inversion of Nietzsche. 3: Marginalists and the Economy In the evolution of economic theory, the impact of marginalism cannot be overstated. Once one had accepted the blunt realities of Marx—specifically, that society was organized based on the perceived value of items—the logical question remained: how does one quantify the value of an item? Marginalism illustrated the diminishing returns on the marginal utility of resold products, which dramatically impacted analysis of capitalist economy, the focus of economic analysis, and theories of value and distribution. Regarding the analysis of capitalist economy, marginalism helped solidify the supply and demand notion of economics as that of mainstream economic thought, as opposed to the labor theory of value espoused by Karl Marx. To put it mildly, this has had ongoing economic effects for the last century and a half. The focus of economic analysis shifted accordingly, as marginalism interacted with price theory: this allowed economics to project demand curves utilizing marginal rates of substitution as a means of determining not only when, but why a seller is willing to relinquish a product for a particular price. Perhaps one of the most lasting effects of marginalism on economic thought has been its effect on theories of value and distribution. With the previous measures in place, economists (as well as common people) now had a more-or-less accurate measure of determining the value of any given product in any given social context. Of course, this also effects the ongoing distribution of certain products to certain demographics in order to maximize profitability. Interestingly, this is one of the chief criticisms of marginalism as well: that it is a vague pseudoscience whose intent is to maintain not only the economic status quo, but the appearance of the status quo. It is no surprise, then, that Marxists continue to grapple with marginalist theory: they see it as a means of keeping the proletariat in check, and preventing any uprisings from them. 4: Thorstein Veblen: Survival of the Fattest Thorstein Veblen, for better or worse, specialized in bringing the human element into economic theory. Specifically, he theorized that the institution of the leisure class was a parasite feeding upon America: upon the backs of workers who are actually productive are a class who seek only profit and produce nothing but waste. He essentially created and popularized the notion of conspicuous consumption as the epitome of this theory: that wealthy individuals spend large amounts of money on ostentatious goods whose sole benefit is to publicly display their wealth to the world. Unfortunately, this has become an integral part of the economy: although an engineer might weep at the man spending over a hundred thousand dollars for a car, the American economy would be crippled if conspicuous consumption vanished overnight. Hence, the parasite metaphor: conspicuous consumption and naked profit helps the wealthy to bloat themselves on the backs of the poor until the entire enterprise inevitably crumbles under its own weight. Veblen perceived quite clearly that human notions about the world are social constructs created by individuals, and as time went on, those notions would change, necessitating a change in economic thought as well. He makes frequent comparisons to evolution to further this end: idle curiosity spurs innovation, innovation spurs conflict between the old guard and the innovators, and an economic Darwinism is born. The advent of industry and technological revolutions merely expanded his original point: the parasitic relationship continued unabated, as the innovations of the productive engineer class were inevitably utilized as means of conspicuous consumption and waste on the part of the leisure class. Planes are developed as a result of idle curiosity, for instance, but it is the leisure class that necessitates the invention of first class as a way of displaying their own status in the social hierarchy.

Article Review Age Related Changes Decision Making ...

Circadian Inhibition of Neuroplasticity The research article that I have chosen for this paper is called â€Å"Age-Related Changes in Decision Making: Comparing Informed and Noninformed Situations†. This research study was conducted Anna C. K. Van Duijvenvoorde, Brenda R. J. Jansen, Joren C. Bredman, and Hilde M. Huizanga, who all had attended the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This report article falls under the Journal of Developmental Psychology, which was published in 2012. The article itself was first published online on October 3, 2011. Life is full of all sorts of different decisions to choose from, which is working the memory of the brain. This decision making skill is believed to grow during in the beginning ages of adulthood; however, not many researchers have fully tested and understood the development and improvement of the decision making skill. Some scientists have said that the developmental changes in decision making are significantly reliant on the storage of the long-term memory. Therefore, Van Duijvenvoorde, Jansen, Bredman, and Huizanga had all conducted this research study to further explore the possible influences that can cause the developmental variations in uncertain decision making, as well as, analyze how well the decision making skill improves during the Iowa Gambling Test. The researchers created their own Iowa Gambling tests. It is basically a test where there are problems that challenge one’s decision making skills. There will always
